Men's Winter County Cup Report
This winter the Hereford and Worcestershire Men's team, consisting of Charlie Crisp (captain), Alex Parker, Callum Treasurer, Jack Smith, Joe Hart, Stuart Shannon, Mike Langston and George Southall played in Hull with the intention of promotion from the off.
The first day against the Isle of Man gave an opportunity for men's team debuters Joe and Stuart to get a win under their belt and some experience on the doubles court in a comfortable 9-0 win.
On the Saturday the challenge increased with a more offensive South of Scotland however the team's resilience increased with the level and another 9-0 win was achieved setting a promotion battle with Wiltshire on the last day.
Unfortunately, a recovering injury was preventing Alex Parker from being able to play at full steam and a very strong Wiltshire number 1 and was forced to withdraw from his singles in order to save himself for the doubles. However, 4 very impressive wins from Callum, Jack, Joe and Stuart put us in a strong 4-2 position going into the last round of doubles.
Although just needing the one double result to secure promotion, Wiltshire came out buzzing with enthusiasm with three very strong pairs. Within a flash the H&W boys found themselves a set down in the first 2 doubles, and a set up but 2 breaks down in the 3rd. George Southall and Mike Langstone played a heroic match tiebreak wrapped up by a blistering lefty ace by George from the deuce court to relive the pressure from the other courts.
An overall 7-2 win has never felt so nerve-racking from the side-line however the stability and confidence in the teams' doubles play excelled once again, pathing an exciting vision for the summer.
A special mention to Alex Parker who unselfishly put his own playing career at risk to play some remarkable tennis on one leg, winning 5 ot of 6 matches at number 1 singles and doubles and to the Joe and Stuart who both went unbeaten in their first ever men's County Cup evet.
