  • Oliver

We all arrived at Caunton Tennis Club which was pretty remote but picturesque and according to Richard Bulbulia was next door to the stately home where they filmed Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.

We couldn’t get on the courts until 12 so Callum took the boys for the warm up in the nearby field!

First up was Shropshire who on paper were the weakest team and this proved to be the case as we won 6-0 with 4 of those rubbers being 4-0, 4-0.

Next up was Derbyshire who were a completely different proposition having 2 players in the top 20 and 1 other in the top 40. There number 1 was a very strong lad who seemed to have to go off and have a shave after every match!! They were very strong and we were 3-1 down in the evening with Jack being the only winner. We returned for the doubles the following day and Jack and Toby Ward had a very close loss in 3 sets but we eventually went down 1-5.

So, it came down to the 2nd place play off with Nottinghamshire and on paper it looked close and so it proved.

We went into an early 2-0 lead with Jack and Toby winning but Alfie had a loss so the no.2 match with Darius was proving pivotal and in a very long and tense match he managed to win through in a match tie break 10-8.  So, we were looking good going into the doubles and even better when we were a set up in both. However, Notts didn’t give in and they both went to champ tiebreaks. At 1 moment we were 9-6 and 5-2 up on both courts but somehow Notts came back and took both rubbers! It then went to a champ tiebreak shootout and again we were up early but again Notts came back and took it 10-6. So ultimately a disappointing end but it was a great match and full credit to the Notts boys for never giving up

My thanks to Callum Treasurer for a being a really good vice-captain, thanks to the parents for being supportive to the team and most of all thanks to the players who fought hard and were good fun throughout the weekend.
