10U Boys County Cup
Date: 22/23 May 2021
- Steve Barnett (Captain)
- James McDonald (assistant)
The first fixture of the day was against Shropshire, with Ben and Druv starting for the team at number 3 and 4. Ben had a tough first match losing in straight sets and Druv keeping us in the game, winning his match in straight sets to keep us a 1-1. Ollie and Jack put up some impressive tennis at number 1 and 2. Ollie won his match in straight sets but unfortunately Jack lost, meaning the scores were tied at 2-2 after singles. The boys have been working hard on their doubles tactics and teamwork during county training sessions, which showed with them winning in both doubles matches, to give us the victory against Shropshire.
The second match of the day was against Derbyshire. The boys wanted to continue their performance and Druv got us off to a great start, after coming back from a set down to win in the third set tie-break. Ben put up a great performance at number 4 but just missed out against his opponent in the match tie-break. Ollie and Jack excelled during their second matches both winning with some fantastic resilience. 3-1 up after the singles and some well-deserved wins for the boys. The doubles was a similar story for Ollie and Jack winning fairly comfortable after some solid tennis from the back of the court. Druv and Ben opted for some more long tennis, after losing the first set, the boys suddenly speered into action to win the second set tiebreak and then the match tie-break to finish us on 5-1 win against Derbyshire.
With the referee anticipating rain later in the day, we got off to any earlier start against our final opponent, Staffordshire. With both us and Staffordshire winning both matches on the previous day, this set up nicely for a final showdown. The first round was Ben and Druv, Ben had a great match, getting off to a flying start and continuing to win his first singles of the competition and to get us in the lead! Druv had a tough match at 3 and despite fighting to the end lost. Ollie had a tough battle at number 1 and unfortunately lost in straight sets. Jack continued his fine performance from the previous day to win his match, resulting in 2-2 after singles. The doubles didn’t start well, although Ben and Druv played well, they struggled in the gusty wind and unfortunately lost. Ollie and Jack lost the first set but fought back in the second to win the 2nd set tie-break, then win the match tie-break to put us into a shootout!! Druv and Ollie stepped up in the tiebreak working well from the ‘both back’ position, however Staffordshire proved too strong after pulling away at 6-6 to take the tiebreak.
Overall, some fantastic tennis, with most debuting for the county. The teamwork and support from all the boys was a pleasure to see and the support from James and parents helped make the event great for all.
